Before you setup remote access, please stop to consider the security and privacy impact. For more information, please see more information on how to work safely from home or public.
If you are working from a home computer, please note the following important points:
- Ensure you are running a supported operating system with recent patches. Windows 7 is no longer secure!
- Add any additional devices such as your home phone to EnhancedCWL (login required)
- Ensure your computer is encrypted
- Ensure you have anti-virus on non-UBC owned . We recommend:
- Sophos Home (Mac/PC)
- Sophos Antivirus for Linux
- Windows Defender (Windows 10)
General Procedures
myVPN
Some services that require the use of myVPN from off-campus are as follows:
- Teamshare storage
- Student Information Systems
- Various software licenses that connect using a license server on campus.
Some services that do not require myVPN are:
- Workday
- Canvas
- FASmail
- Student and Alumni Email
- FASMail webmail
- FASMail phone setup
- Electrical and Computer Engineering webmail
- Student and Alumni webmail
Teamshare and Home Drive
Setup documents are available for Teamshare and Home Drive. Units using other storage services might need to put a ticket in to request assistance.
Applied Science SharePoint
Applied Science SharePoint can now be accessed from off campus without use of VPN.
myVPN Services Available By Department
Don't see your unit here? It's likely that you don't have any systems or services that need to be secred by a dedicate myVPN pool. Regular myVPN should be sufficient for your use in this case.
Dedicated myVPN
- Additional services you can access: Aspen License Server
- Eligibility: Faculty, staff, and graduate students as requested. Undergraduate students are provisioned automatically if registered for a course that requires Aspen.

- Client Setup Information: myVPN Setup Guides
- Supplemental Login Information: Append the ‘chbe’ suffix to your CWL username. E.g. cwlusername.chbe
Please note, if you don’t need additional services you may still choose to log into myVPN with your cwl username without your unit’s suffix.
Parallels/2X
- More about Parallels/2X: Parallels/2X is a windows remote desktop service that provides access to applications such as Aspen and MATLAB. This can be convenient for those running Apple Mac OSX computers.
- Eligibility: Eligibility depends on your enrolment in a CHBE course section requiring software available on Parallels/2X.

- Client Setup Information: Provided by your instructor.
Dedicated myVPN
- Additional services you can access: Services normally available on the local ECE network.
- Eligibility: Faculty, staff, and graduate students as requested.
